Senior Staff Data Engineer
Position Summary
The Senior Staff Data Engineer plays a critical leadership role in Empower Pharmacy’s data engineering strategy by architecting enterprise-wide solutions, mentoring senior engineering talent, and spearheading initiatives that drive innovation, scalability, and quality. This role bridges technical execution with strategic foresight, guiding cross-functional initiatives that accelerate access to affordable, high-quality medications. This position is ideal for a deeply experienced data engineer with a strong architectural mindset and a desire to grow into a Principal Engineer.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Design and evolve modern cloud-native data architecture across teams, including data lakes, lakehouses, data mesh domains, and scalable data marts.
- Own and improve shared Extract Load Transform (ELT) frameworks, data contracts, observability systems, and platform components used across engineering and analytics teams.
- Drive data modernization efforts, including the consolidation of data marts into a unified warehouse and adoption of advanced governance practices.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies and practices – e.g., data build tool (dbt), Iceberg, streaming, machine learning pipelines – where they add value to platform goals.
- Design secure systems aligned with Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, GxP, and other compliance frameworks, in close collaboration with Governance, Risk, and Compliance and InfoSec teams.

Knowledge and Skills
- Expertise in designing and implementing Amazon Web Service (AWS) serverless data platforms such as AWS Glue, Lambda, S3, Redshift, Athena, and Lake Formation, along with mastery in data modeling methodologies including Kimball, Inmon, and Data Vault.
- Advanced proficiency in pipeline development using tools like Fivetran, dbt, and custom ELT frameworks; orchestration tools such as Airflow or Dagster; and modern engineering practices including continuous integration/continuous deployment, infrastructure as code (IaC), and GitOps workflows.

Experience and Qualifications
- Minimum of 12 years of experience in data engineering, including at least 3 years in senior or staff-level roles with a proven track record of architectural leadership and mentoring senior engineering talent.
- Requires a degree in computer science, engineering, statistics, or related quantitative discipline.
- AWS Certified SysOps Administrator; Certified Kubernetes Administrator or Docker Certified Associate; Apache Airflow Certification.
