Position Summary

The Packaging Engineer plays a vital role in the design, development, qualification, and optimization of packaging systems for pharmaceutical products. This position is responsible for ensuring packaging solutions maintain product integrity, meet regulatory requirements, and align with operational and supply chain capabilities. The Packaging Engineer partners cross-functionally with teams across Quality, Research and Development (R&D), Regulatory, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain to deliver efficient, compliant, and scalable packaging systems from development through commercial production.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Designs, develops, and evaluates primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging systems—assessing materials, formats, and equipment to ensure optimal product protection, regulatory compliance, manufacturability, and user experience.
  • Conducts packaging validation and testing in accordance with American Society for Testing and Materials and International Safe Transit Association standards, while maintaining detailed technical documentation including specifications, Computer-Aided Design drawings, Standard Operating Procedures, and bills of materials.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with internal and external teams—including R&D, Quality, Regulatory, and Manufacturing—to implement and optimize packaging designs, automation processes, and production scalability.
  • Troubleshoots packaging issues across the product lifecycle, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions to improve performance and reduce cost.
  • Supports vendor selection, qualification, and performance management to ensure suppliers meet packaging quality, compliance, and operational requirements.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the workday and frequently use their hands and fingers to handle or feel in order to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience with packaging systems, materials compatibility, equipment qualification, and regulatory requirements for pharmaceutical packaging.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD), along with strong problem-solving and cross-functional communication skills.

Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of packaging engineering experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device industry.
  • Bachelor’s degree in packaging science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Certified Packaging Professional preferred; Lean Six Sigma or Project Management certification is a plus.
