Position Summary

The Director of Formulation Development plays a key role in advancing Empower’s mission to deliver innovative, life-changing medications. Leading a team in developing small/large molecules, biologics, and combination products, this role ensures technical excellence and regulatory compliance. Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversees pharmaceutical formulation development for small/large molecules, biologics, and combination products, providing leadership and expertise in formulation strategies, process development, and project management to ensure timely, budget-compliant progression from bench to manufacturing.
  • Manages the design, development, and optimization of both sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical formulations, ensuring strict compliance with United States Pharmacopeia (USP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) guidelines to meet industry standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Leads a formulation team in successfully transferring products to production facilities in across the United States, while also managing third-party vendors and external laboratories for formulation support.
  • Collaborates closely with quality and regulatory teams to ensure formulations meet all regulatory requirements, ensuring proper documentation, validation protocols, and compliance throughout the development process.
  • Drives innovation in formulation techniques, leveraging advanced technologies to enhance product efficacy, safety, and scalability, while mentoring and managing a high-performing team committed to excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.

While performing the responsibilities of the job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to remain in a stationary position for a significant amount of the workday and frequently use their hands and fingers to handle or feel in order to access, input, and retrieve information from the computer and other office productivity devices. The employee is regularly required to move about the office and around the corporate campus. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational abilities, with a proven track record of effectively influencing cross-functional teams, fostering collaboration, and navigating complex regulatory landscapes to drive results.
  • Expertise in formulation design, process validation, and aseptic techniques with in-depth knowledge of FDA guidelines, USP standards, and cGMP for compounded medications. Skilled in Microsoft Office Suite and utilizing data-driven methods for problem-solving, formulation optimization, and process improvement.

Experience and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in pharmaceutical formulation development, including at least 3 years in a leadership role required.
  • Masters in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field required; Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Philosophy in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry, or a related field is strongly preferred.
  • Certified Pharmaceutical Industry Professional or related certification is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience leveraging AI in daily work to drive efficiency, solve problems, and enhance decision-making—adept at integrating AI-powered solutions into all workflows.
